Finalist Q&A - Therese Rawsthorne

1. What does fashion mean to you in today’s world?
Fashion is a really easy & accessible vehicle for self expression. It is the most quick and effective way to communicate how you feel about yourself and your place in the world.

2. What other women throughout history have inspired you in your life and career?
Creatively I love the work of Vionnet & Zandra Rhodes, they are two women I always come back to. I also love Grace Jones and my Granny.

3. What is your favourite quote/ words of wisdom?
I always try to listen at least as much as I talk.

4. What do you think is the key to success in the fashion industry?
A mix of creativity and determination.

5. What is your favourite outfit? (can be personal from your wardrobe or your label)
The powder pink Cigarette girl dress with the sequined Trapeze leggings from the AW09 collection.

6. What is your first memory? (can be of fashion or just a childhood memory whatever springs to mind)
Poking our dog with a long stick to see how fast I could run.

7. What is your favourite material to work with?
Natural fibres, especially cotton & silk. I love the age & texture you can put into cotton, and the drape of silk is unbeatable.

8. What has been the greatest moment of your career/life so far?
Just finishing a collection that I’m really proud of is incredibly satisfying for me. My work is what I spend most of my waking hours on and I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so when you invest so much into something it’s great to really materialise the vision that was in your head & know that you got it. And of course seeing other people get excited about it is cool.

9. What is your favourite place in the world?
Underwater. It’s calm and beautiful down there.

10. If you were given a pin board and asked to pin five of your greatest inspirations in your life and career to it, what would they be?
This is a bit tough. Of course there would have to be appearances from the inspirations already discussed in q. 2, but I think that a lot of inspiration is less tangible than something you can pin to a board. For me it’s more about a spirit or an essence, something a bit borderless. For now I will nominate Alyson’s stitching, Tessa’s style, Nadene’s strength, Oscar’s loyalty & Alyssa’s endless enthusiasm.
