Finalist Q&A - Tina Kalivas

1.  What does fashion mean to you in today’s world?
March to your own drum, wherever, whatever you’re in the mood for. Every day
should be different.

2. What other women throughout history have inspired you in your life and
career?
Vivienne Westwood & Mother Teresa

3. What is your favourite quote/ words of wisdom?
The journey is the destination

4. What do you think is the key to success in the fashion industry?
Loving what you do and sharing it with people

5. What is your favourite outfit?
I have a star top from the Bow Wow Wow period of Vivienne Westwood. It is verging on thread bare but I cherish it!

6. What is your first memory?
My first fashion/glamour memory is colouring in my fingernails with pink texta to pretend I had nail polish on

7. What is your favourite material to work with?
Calico- I love toilles.. but as for garments I love WOOL and COTTON

8. What has been the greatest moment of your career/life so far?
Meeting my friends and creative buddies that have helped me get here. I suppose if I had to pin one moment down it would be driving to Cabramatta to the film set of Little Fish to show Cate Blanchet my collection upon her request. It was crazy - we were in her tiny trailer trying on a whole bunch of outfits and taking photos!

9. What is your favourite place in the world?
Any rainforest will do!

10. If you were given a pin board and asked to pin five of your greatest inspirations in your life and career to it, what would they be?
My Grandmother comes first. She raised 10 children and made everything with her hands. She taught me how to knit and crochet when I was around 6-7 and I would sit with her and get into the zone.

Music is important to my work - I always have to have it on. I love fashion/music crossovers. I love what the glam rock bands brought to fashion and vice versa. Peaches is good at this. Recently she was in town and ended up with her crew at my house for her after show party! My friend who styles her created some great cossies for her and she wore some of my stuff too which is great.

London. I lived there for 8 years. It’s not till now I can realize just how much of a huge impact and grounding it made to my creativity. Working for such an amazing designer like Alexander McQueen was so inspiring and he is a true genius.

Nature. It has all the answers.... crazy coloured fish, moss and weird plantations, birds of paradise, skylines, waterfalls etc etc!! Also keeping nature in mind, I pattern make on the body so I am always conscious of working with its flow and proportion. They say we design from what we see so being in tune with nature is very important to me. It also keeps me grounded.

I love Sci fi novels. I like film too but reading is better because you get to create your own wacko images in your mind! My favourite writers are William S Boroughs and J G Ballard.
