1. What do the words “a picture speaks a thousand words” mean to you in terms of art and design?
Those words sum up how my mind works in terms of design, I’m a very visual person and to me, an image is so much more powerful than a description.
2. How would you describe the aesthetic behind your work?
Design has the opportunity to impact upon the way we see the world, I do believe in form following function, but in saying that my Eulo project was also greatly about redefining the aesthetic nature of sustainable products, no longer do products that are environmentally friendly in purpose have to be designed based on function. We are seeing more and more sustainable products that have an interesting aesthetic and new product language. For my Eulo design, I was inspired by minimalist sculpture, truth to material and clean lines.
3. Where and when do you find most of your ideas?
I find most of my ideas from day to day objects around me that interest me in how they look or how they work, looking at something unrelated and applying aspects of it to something different to create a new idea. It’s sometimes a curse, but I find it hard to sleep until I resolve a design problem.
4. What is your favourite thing to do in your precious spare time?
Shop in old second-hand furniture shops, I’ve found some of my most treasured things this way.
5. As an artist and a woman what aspects of femininity and women have inspired you in your life and career?
I’ve never thought of myself as a very feminine woman, as a kid I preferred Lego and train sets to dolls (which may explain the career choice of Industrial Designer) I come from quite a creative family and my great aunt was an amazing painter and ceramicist, her work was always around me growing up and that inspired me greatly.
6. What are the five most important things in creating a work of art/design?
Understanding the problem
Addressing the user’s needs
Providing an Innovative Solution
Detailed Design
Confidence in your Ability
7. What is the most valuable piece of advice you have been given?
My parents always encouraged and supported me to do what I felt passionate about in life, I think that is the best advice, make the most of the time you have.
8. What’s next?
Who knows?!
